What Does Sovereign Deed Mean By “Natural Disaster,” “Man-Made Disaster” And “Pandemic”?
-
Natural disasters are emergencies caused by severe weather or environmental events. They include volcanoes, earthquakes, wildfires, tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, severe winter storms and heat waves. The aftermath of natural disasters can include infectious diseases, unsafe food and drinking water, homelessness and psychological distress.
Man-made disasters are events caused by man, either intentionally or by accident, and that can directly or indirectly cause severe threats to public health and/or well-being.
A pandemic is a global outbreak of a disease that occurs when a new virus emerges in the human population, causes serious illness, and spreads easily among people.
Epidemics and pandemics can place sudden and intense demands on infrastructure and health systems. They expose existing weaknesses in these systems, and, in addition to their morbidity and mortality, can disrupt economic and civil activity and development.
